 Patriot Games

© A. Scott Piraino

The Republican National Convention has served its purpose. George W. Bush is riding high and on message: The war on terror is the source of our troubles, and only he can win the war.

The fact is, the War on Terror is far from won. Al-Qeada is still dangerous, and Osama bin Laden is still at large. A recent study even concluded that al-Qaeda and other terrorist cells have grown in number since the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq.

Osama bin Laden is still at large because the Bush administration’s half-assed invasion of Afghanistan failed to capture him and thousands of other al-Qaeda operatives. There were more policemen in New York guarding the Republicans at their convention than there are troops in Afghanistan searching for al-Qaeda. The Bush administration failed to defeat al-Qaeda in Afghanistan because they were determined to invade Iraq.

We are not winning the War on Terror, but that does not matter. What matters is that the Bush administration has convinced Americans that the war in Iraq is the War on Terror. And they have accomplished this by lying.

Bush’s speech about Iraqi agents purchasing uranium in Niger was a lie. The President’s claims that we had evidence Iraq was developing chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons was a lie. The Bush administration’s claims that Saddam’s regime was involved with al-Qaeda and the 9/11 attacks was also a lie.

The 9/11 attacks are the most serious failure of US national defense since Pearl Harbor, yet our military response to al-Qaeda has been tepid. There are no WMDs in Iraq, but there is plenty of evidence that our enemies are developing, and even exporting ,nuclear weapons technology. However, the evidence points to North Korea, Iran, and our reluctant ally Pakistan, not Iraq.

The truth is the national unity and international solidarity we earned after the September 11th attacks has been squandered by the invasion of Iraq. One third of the US army is entrenched in Iraq, and will be pinned down fighting a growing insurgency for the foreseeable future. And the unrest and violence has increased since the handover of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government in June.

148 US troops have been killed since the handover on June 28th, including 65 deaths and more than 1,000 wounded during the fighting in August. The Pentagon reported 87 attacks per day on U.S. forces in August—the worst monthly average of the war. In total, over 1000 U.S. military personnel have been killed in Iraq, another 7000 have been wounded, and nearly 13,000 Iraqis have died in the war.

The news only gets worse.

In in the past week over 200 Iraqis have been killed, and several hundred more have been wounded. Recent attacks included a massive mortar barrage targeting US Headquarters in Baghdad that killed sixty. Scores of Iraqi civilians were killed in the crossfire of a firefight between US forces and insurgents. Air strikes in Fallujah killed twenty. And the latest report is a car bomb has killed 47 Iraqis and wounded 114 at a Baghdad police station.

President Bush and his cabal of advisors have no one but themselves to blame for losing control over the war, and public perceptions of the war. But placing the blame on themselves, (where it belongs), would mean taking responsibility for the lies they told to garner support for the invasion of Iraq. Instead the Bush administration has adopted a new strategy: Minimize the negative news coverage from the war, at least until after the November elections.

To that end, whole cities and regions of Iraq have been declared “insurgent enclaves”. Fallujah, Ramadi, Samarra, and several other areas of Iraq are now off limits to US troops. In effect these areas have been ceded to the insurgents.

These safe havens have become staging areas where the insurgents can operate with impunity, and plan more coordinated attacks. US troops are now hunkered down and fighting off increasingly tenacious guerrillas, without being allowed to deliver a killing blow. During the heavy fighting in August, US forces defeated the Mahdi Army, but the fighting ended in negotiations that allowed the insurgents to retreat, with their weapons.

We are not winning the War in Iraq, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that the Bush administration has convinced us we have to keep fighting. Using simpleton slogans like “if we don’t fight them there we’ll have to fight them here”, the White House has convinced us that the war in Iraq is necessary.

The truth is we are fighting an enemy that would not exist, if we had not invaded Iraq. The Mahdi Army is our creation, as are the insurgent groups that have flocked to Iraq to battle the Americans. We are creating terrorists, not defeating them.

The people of Iraq are not better off than they were four years ago, and neither are we. There are one million fewer jobs in the US than there were when George Bush took office, and the average family has lost over 1000 dollars in annual income. Our budget and trade deficits have climbed to record highs, surpassing 400 billion dollars a year, each.

The budget surpluses inherited by George Bush have been squandered, but that doesn’t matter. Because the Bush administration has convinced us that the deficits, and the recession, are caused by the war on terror. Our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have cost nearly $200 billion since the 9/11 attacks, yet the Bush administration has run up over one trillion dollars  in debt.

The truth is, our budget deficits are the result of George Bush’s huge tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. His administration passed a tax cut bill before the 9/11 attacks, then used the war on terror as an excuse to pass another “tax relief” package. As for the stubborn recession, technically, the recession of 2001 ended over two years ago.

It is difficult for the average American to believe that because they have not seen any profits from the economy’s recovery. Since the recession officially ended in late 2001, 47 percent of the real national income growth has gone to corporate profits, and only 15 percent to wages and salaries. This is the first economic recovery since WW II where corporate profits gained at the expense of worker’s pay and benefits.

And let’s not forget the real cause of the recession. It was not the September 11th attacks, but the collapse of companies like Enron that precipitated a stock market meltdown. Enron's CEO was the number one contributor to the Bush campaign, yet the company managed to go bankrupt after legalizing the extortion of electricity, and bankrupting the State of California.

Given the facts, you’d think that anyone could defeat George Bush in November. But The collapse of Enron, the energy debacle in California, tax cuts for the rich, our soaring deficits, nuclear proliferation, none of these issues matter today. The War(s) on Terror are the issues in this election, and Americans are convinced that only George Bush can win those wars.

And that’s just not true. Whoever wins the Presidency in 2004 had better be ready to face the music, and convince the American People to do the same. George W.Bush is not that man, and our country cannot survive four more years of his patriot games.

Yea, and people have to let go of the "What would Kerry do?" question as though Bush had to do what he had to do.  The US has gone and invaded a hornet's nest.  Somehow though Bush continues to provide a definition to what "progress" in Iraq means, and the American public continue to buy it.

Thanks for the comment Snozzleberryjam.

Psykomeyeko;

I agree. I dont support John Kerry, I LOATHE George Bush. I cant believe the electorate is going to support this scumbag. But you know what, if we re-elect him, we deserve the constitutional crisis his second administration will give us.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Well put. I couldn't agree more.
But from where I am, I can't see the average American electing John Kerry, because really, no one quite has any idea what he stands for. And why can't he go after the administration for the mess that is Iraq today? And the issues at Guantanamo Bay? (Some high-ranking official, I forget which, has said that he believes at least 30%, if not more, of the detainees there are guiltless, and yet the Bush administration has holed them up there denying them of their rightful freedom). It seems the only thing going for Bush are his fantastic spin doctors.

Very true Earthbound Misfit;

John Kerry cant attack Bush over the war in Iraq because he voted for it as a Senator. So he makes wishy-washy comments about how Bush Inc made "wrong choices" and "misled the public". I mean, what the hell is that?

The Kerry campaign should be screaming foul play and burning that off-the-lake fratboy in effigy. However, the bungling by Kerry is no excuse for the machinations of Bush Inc. These are some truly scary crooked bastards, and they've got to be stopped.

i love your essay and style or writing, its very unique and untained by fame.
the thing that scares me is that the DNC is doing such a bad job of attacking bush. and it doesn't help that John Kerry is so vague on his stances on everything. i haven't seen a thing about him for a good week now, and we have less then 5 weeks to pump it up, and get bush out of power.

Thanks Buildthefloorup;

Yes, I'm untainted by fame, and pissed off about it. As for the election, I am not optimistic about Kerry. True he is not getting his message out, but the American people are not getting informed either.

if Bush is re-elected, I will blaim the people for being so stupid, not Kerry for being wishy-washy.

Click here to read the entire article Some time ago, while speaking from the Oval Office, the president looked into the eyes of the American public and said: "Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors."

The president added that the purpose of this military action was "to protect the national interest of the United States, and indeed the interests of people throughout the Middle East and around the world." The president explained that Saddam Hussein "must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons."

During the course of his Oval Office address, the president said that other countries possess weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles, but with Saddam, there is one big difference. "He has used them," the president said. "Not once, but repeatedly."

"Unleashing chemical weapons against Iranian troops during a decade-long war, not only against soldiers, but against civilians. Firing Scud missiles at the citizens of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Iran. And not only against a foreign enemy, but even against his own people, gassing Kurdish civilians in Northern Iraq," the president explained.

Setting an ominous tone, the president declared, "The international community had little doubt then, and I have no doubt today, that left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will use these terrible weapons again."

So ... is the president lying? According to the Democrats, led by Sen. Kerry and Terry McAuliffe, because no weapons of mass destruction have been found, the president must be lying to the American public. It is the centerpiece of their presidential campaign.

It doesn't seem to make a difference that information on Iraq's WMD program was supported by the CIA, Great Britain's MI6 and Russian Intelligence operatives. No, people simply compare the president's public statements with the lack of current WMDs as evidence that the president lied.

Lakerace, why do you do this?

I dont give a sh*t about the democrats. You always post these pro-Bush statements, the go on about the Democrats. A liar is a liar, whether liberal or conservative, republican or democrat.

As for the alleged WMDs, you have answerwed your own question in your post. Here it is "people simply compare the president's public statements with the lack of current WMDs as evidence that the president lied". That is exactly right.

There are no WMDs in Iraq, yet Bush warned us there were as a pretence to invading Iraq. He lied.

To All American Voters,

I am a senior citizen. During the Clinton Administration I had an extremely good and well paying job. I took numerous vacations and had several vacation homes. Since President Bush took office, I have watched my entire life change for the worse.

I lost my job.
I lost my two sons in that terrible Iraqi War.
I lost my homes.
I lost my health insurance.

As a matter of fact I lost virtually everything and became homeless. Adding insult to injury, when the authorities found me living like an animal, instead of helping me, they arrested me. I will do anything that Senator Kerry wants to insure that a Democrat is back in the White House come next year. Bush has to go.

I just thought you would like to know how one senior citizen views the Bush Administration.

Thank you for taking time to read my letter.

Sincerely,
Saddam Hussein

I wanted to list a few things I'd like to see happen under G.W.B.'s second term in office. So on with it.....

1. Conform to, inform and educate the public, and for goodness sake follow the constitution of the United States of America.... Particualary the 10th Amendment. Go read your constitution, it's not hard to understand, it limits the federal government to a few things and leaves the rest for the individual states to decide what's good for the citizens of their state. Local governments should mean much more to the citizen than the federal government it's too bad it's just the opposite, something our founding fathers never intended.

2. Simplify the tax code. It should only take a postcard size paper to fill out and send in each year.

3. Social security should be abolished, but that would be political suicide I know it will never happen so a good start would be to allow citizens to opt out of the system or at worse a "lock box" would be good. Don't spend Social Security Surpluses each year, leave those funds for Social Security, not paying down the debt or sending it to the general fund. Use Social Security funds only for Social security....

4. School Vouchers for everyone. If your state pays say $7000 per student for government schools than I say you should be able to get that $7000 and spend it on any school of your choice be it public school, private school or religious school.

5. Stop the Democrat Fillibuster in the Senate of Federal Judicial Nominees. Allow the President to nominate the judges he wants, and confirm them pronto.

6. Allow drilling for Oil and other natural resources on our own soil, including ANWR, Other Federal Lands and off shore.

7. Bomb Iran, and North Korea Nuclear facilities. I mean like Israel did to Iraq way back when in the early 1980's. What harm came after to Israel, more terrorist attacks, I don't think so they had terrorisit attacks way before this and they continue to this day. Maybe doing this will send a message to the world and the Terrorist "don't mess with us" (yah I don't mind being the 'bad guy' in the world).

8. Stop being the Police Officer for the rest of the world. You wonder why Europe, Canada and the like spend large amounts of money on their Welfare Programs, their socialized medicine, their free health care? Because they know they don't have to spend that money on building a strong military to protect themselves, they know good ole' Uncle Sam will come to their rescue if any harm comes to them.

9. Secure the borders, heck build a large wall on the border, inforce imigration laws, and limit who can imigrate to our country.

10. Get rid of the national debt, it can easily be done if all of the above suggestions are followed.

Lakerace;

I appreciate your comments, but this is my weblog. You constantly post these diatribes that do not address the issue presented in my essays. Also, anytime I post an article that criticizes the bush administration, (which I do often), you comment with some proof that the democrats did the same thing.

Why? I am not a democrat, and if they were in office pulling this shit I would ream them as well. I appreciate your comments Lakerace, and I know you believe in what you post. But please address the issue addressed in my essay when posting comments.
